In the early 70’s, with borrowed money, Jewel Thais-Williams, got her chance to buy a rinky-dink bar and start building the club she dreamed about for her community.  Her tenacity and powerful talent for the business, in an industry dominated by straight white males, paid off. By the late 70’s and 80’s, Jewel was hosting and running a successful, international dance club every night with frequent celebrity clientele passing through - (and dancing till dawn!).  Jewel had created her own community’s empire as patrons of all shapes, colors, and sexual orientations lined up around the block to get in to the booming dance club known affectionately as “The Catch.”

An Exclusive Screening of Jewel’s Catch One documentary that is in production will be shown at the “Last Dance.” The film celebrates both the glitzy essence of the disco era one woman’s courage to stand up to its dark side. Music, dance, outrageous fashion, global health issues, racism, raging fires, homophobia, celebrities, police harassment…all converged at the internationally famous Catch One nightclub. Considered the “Studio 54 of the West Coast,” and reportedly where Madonna rehearsed her “vogueing,” it was a beacon of happiness, hope and survival.  During the 1980’s AIDS crisis it was the “in” place to go at night, and by daylight Jewel turned its parking lot into a soup kitchen to help those inflicted by the terrible disease. Jewel was one of the few unwavering hands helping so many that had no place to go or were accepted (day or night).

For over 42 years Jewel kept "Catch's" doors open to everyone, and changed a lot of lives. Let’s celebrate Jewel Thais-William and her “Last Dance” at Catch One.
